[Norfolk Island]A Hidden Gem of the Pacific Ocean~ Norfolk Island~

オーストラリアでの一般的な国内旅行先はシドニーやパース、ブリスベンやケアンズなどのそれぞれの州の大都市、もしくはバイロンベイやヌーサなどの街がメジャーな目的地です。しかし、オーストラリアにはオーストラリア大陸外（海外）にあるけど、旅行自体は国内旅行扱いになるおもしろい場所があるんです。

For many Japanese travellers, well known destinations in the Asia Pacific are mostly in Australia and New Zealand. Many tourists often visit Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. Yet, there is ONE interesting domestic destination which is considered to be *an external territory of Australia, but is considered travelling within Australia. It is complicated.

その場所とはNorfolk Island ノーフォーク島です。
Norfolk Island is such a majestic location.

ここに初めて来るまではノーフォーク島？どこそれ？聞いたことないという感じでした。1回の滞在で虜になってしまいました。

I had never heard of this island before living in Australia. It even remains unknown to many Australians.

旅行自体は去年の年末に観光でいきました。そして、今年の年末にもまた旅行すする予定をしています。この島自体、日本人がまだあまり多く訪れていなく、情報もあまりない旅行先です。ここではノーフォーク島についての魅力を紹介したいと思います。

I visited Norfolk Island in December of 2018, and I plan to return as soon as the travel restrictions are lifted. Before my visit, I found there was limited information on the island in Japanese this is a place that hardly any Japanese have visited. The aim of this article is to introduce this amazing place so that other people can experience its beauty.

オーストラリア領であるノーフォーク島はオーストラリアの遥か東、そしてニュージーランドの北東に位置する太平洋にある小さな島です。

An an external territory of Australia, Norfolk Island is located to the far east, off the coast of Brisbane. It is located between Auckland and Noumea.

なんといってもノーフォーク島の魅力は多くの手付かずの自然風景です。住宅地や中心地以外は道路／駐車場など以外はほぼ自然そのままです。

The most impressive part of Norfolk Island is its abundant natural beauty which is pristine and untouched.

島々の多くの場所で綺麗な風景を体験できますし、多くの牛も島のいたるところを歩いています。島の人口よりも牛の方が多いなんて噂も笑

You can experience beautiful scenery and nature at many points around this island. When you are driving, watch out for the cows who wander freely and have right of way!

エミリーベイEmily Bay

ノーフォーク島で欠かせない場所といえばエミリーベイ。泳ぐのに安全で水が透き通ったビーチ。浅瀬のサンゴ礁ではたくさんの魚に合うことができるかもしれないです。

Emily Bay is one of the most iconic locations in Norfolk Island. It is a safe swimming beach and lagoon. With the shallow water level, you might find fish hiding in the reef.

キングストンエリア Kingston Convict Settlement

広大に広がったキングストン史跡地区は世界遺産にも登録されている観光地です。昔の囚人流刑地があります。今では建物も少ないですが、昔の刑務所跡もみることができます。

Kingston area is known for the settlement area for Penal Colony from England. This place is registered for the World heritage site.

この島にきて、もう一つ感謝できたことがあります。忙しい生活やオンラインからの脱却です。

Since I visited this island, I learnt to appreciate being away from my busy life and not being so reliant on technology.

ノーフォーク島での携帯電波はまだまだ２Gが主流です。もちろん４Gや３Gもありますが、使えるのは街の中心部や一部の場所のみで中心部から外れると２Gの電波しかはいりません。もちろんホテルにはWifiがありますが、無料で1日200MBまでなどの容量制限もあります。

2G is still mainstream on the island. There are places where you can use 3G and 4G but these are only in limited locations such as on the main street and in your accommodation. Most accommodation offers free and/or paid wifi but it may only be for minimal usage.

そのため、この島で１週間生活すると普段はネットに繋がっている自分から簡単に脱却できるように思います。常にスマホを持って情報が流れて来る時代、そう言った状況から脱却して真に自然や風景を楽しむことができます。

As a result, if you are in anyway addicted to your technology, you will forget the need to be on the phone or a device. Simply enjoy your time here.

Note:*Norfolk Island currently comes under Australian Jurisdiction as an external territory but it is culturally very independent of Australia and they are currently fighting for their full independence with the United Nations.
